Real focus on league ahead of Liverpool clash

Madrid - Spanish champions Real Madrid warm up for Wednesday's Champions League duel with Liverpool with a home match against Real Betis on Saturday as they continue their attempt to reel in runaway leaders Barcelona.

The upcoming European tie with Liverpool has understandably stolen the limelight this week but Real need to retain their focus as they attempt to cut Barca's 10-point advantage at the top.

Juande Ramos's team have won eight successive league games and shaved two points off Barca's lead last weekend when they crushed Sporting Gijon 4-0 and Betis held Barca to a 2-2 draw.

"Since my arrival (at the end of December) we have only collected one point less than Barca," Ramos pointed out in newspaper 'La Gazzetta dello Sport'.
"There is no doubt we are doing brilliantly and are not that far away from the best Barcelona in history."

Statistics show Barcelona have recorded the most ever points in the first half of the season - an incredible 50 points from 19 games - but coach Pep Guardiola has insisted that it will count for nothing if they don't win the title.

Buoyed by a Derby win against Sevilla and a point against Barca, Betis come to Madrid full of confidence and Real will be without midfielder Lass Diarra through a bout of gastroenteritis while Arjen Robben is a slight doubt with a hip problem.

Barcelona travel to Lyon on Tuesday for their Champions League assignment but first of all they have a derby match against Espanyol on Saturday night.

It is top against bottom and with home advantage Barcelona are expected to win especially when taking into account the fact that Espanyol have not tasted victory since the beginning of November.

Nevertheless Barca shouldn't be complacent having struggled to a 2-1 win in the first league game when Espanyol led 1-0 until Thierry Herny (78 min) equalised and Lionel Messi scored a winning penalty eight minutes into stoppage time.

Samuel Eto'o scored twice as Barca came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw at Betis last weekend but has admitted this week that he may not stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

"Will I stay at Barca? I have made a decision on my future but I can't say anything at the moment," Eto'o told magazine sportsweek.

"I don't like players that kiss the badge after scoring because they don't hesitate to leave if another club offers a million euros more."

Eto'o, top-scorer in the league with 23 goals, has openly said former club Real Mallorca is where his heart lies but the club are third from bottom of the table so a transfer would represent a huge backward step.

Guardiola was willing to let Eto'o go in the summer but will be glad he didn't with the Cameroon forward's goals powering his team 10-point clear at the summit.

"For me 10 points is a considerable advantage and we are also on form and dominating games," explained Barca midfielder Xavi.

"We are calm and hope to continue like this because we could win some titles this season."

Elsewhere, the game of the weekend sees Champions League hopefuls Atletico Madrid and Sevilla face off in Seville on an action-packed Saturday.

Sevilla sit third, which is where they would like to be at the end of the campaign, while Atletico are five points behind in sixth.

Goals are usually forthcoming in this fixture and Atletico attacker Diego Forlan sung the praises of strike partner Sergio "Kun" Aguero comparing the Argentine to former Brazil and Barcelona great Romario.

"Aguero is like Romario," said Forlan.

"His style is reminiscent of how Romario used to play. He is rapid, a great dribbler and has lots of ability."

Valencia are three points behind Sevilla in fourth and travel to Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday desperate to cure their away sickness.

Valencia have lost their last five away matches and midfielder David Albelda admits it is a difficult time for everyone at the club.

"Over a season you have highs and lows and I think you can say we are having our most difficult moment of the season," Albelda said.

David Beckham is on loan to AC Milan until March 9, but has said he wants to stay in Italy and the club reportedly is trying to sign him to a contract through the end of the 2009-2010 season.
It has taken a while, but Victoria Beckham finally has been heard from in the ongoing drama that is David Beckham's quest to move to Milan, Italy.

Asked if there were a strong possibility of her husband remaining with AC Milan instead of coming back to the Galaxy, Victoria Beckham told the Milan newspaper Il Giornale this week: "There is, but it's a very big decision to make.

Ferguson proud of Scholes' longevity

After Ryan Giggs' masterclass at Derby on Sunday, it was Scholes' turn to show he can still be lethal at the highest level - capping an outstanding performance with the opener in Wednesday night's 3-0 Barclays Premier League win over Fulham at Old Trafford.

"He was fantastic. Some of his switches of play were magnificent," said Ferguson "These lads are great examples to young players in how they live their life."

He added: "They have kept their ambition, which is important. We are delighted with their performance and are so proud to have them here."

Scholes broke the deadlock in trademark fashion, thanks to a sloppy bit of goalkeeping from Mark Schwarzer who fumbled the volley from Michael Carrick's corner, then helped set up Dimitar Berbatov for the second - before Wayne Rooney tapped home with his first touch to send the Red Devils five points clear of Liverpool.

With Edwin van der Sar already well on the way to a 14th clean sheet that will turn into a European league record if he adds another against Blackburn at Old Trafford on Saturday, United never looked like being beaten once Scholes struck.

Neither is it that obvious how their grip can be prised from an 18th league title.

Evidence of United's squad depth was provided not just by Giggs' omission but also the return of Rooney, brought on after an hour following a seven-match absence with a hamstring injury and promptly scoring United's final goal with his first touch.

"Wayne is 100% now - there is no question about that," added the Red Devils chief.

"He is back, and we hope he stays back. We are at the stage of the season when we don't take chances with any of the players. If you do and exacerbate a problem they can be out for weeks. We don't want that."
Sir Alex Ferguson is proud to still have Paul Scholes at Manchester United.

Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs, who recently extended his contract by a year with the Red Devils, is pleased with his form and says he is enjoyi

Ryan Giggs put on yet another man-of-the-match display as Manchester United romped past Derby County and into the sixth round of the FA Cup.

The 35-year-old has been a revelation this season, moving away from the left-hand touchline - his home for the best part of 18 years - to take up a unique role in the centre of midfield.

And Robbie Savage reckons his fellow Welshman should be odds on to snare what would, quite remarkably, be his first PFA Player of the Year award.

The Derby midfielder said in The Sun, “Ryan was unbelievable [on Saturday]. He’s so hard to pick up.

“He’s redefined his role. He plays in the middle of the park, he plays out wide, he plays up front. He’s a credit to himself and to the game and, for me, he’s the Player of the Year.

“Ryan’s 35 and every time he plays he seems to get man of the match. When he was a winger, he was incredible. Now he’s changed his role and he’s still incredible.

“He sits in behind the midfield and you don’t know whether to drop in to pick him up.”

Giggs is also expected to add to his trophy haul this season, as United remain alive on all fronts and are on target to claim a third consecutive Premier League crown.

Savage, a product of the Old Trafford youth system, believes Sir Alex Ferguson's current crop are the best of the best.

He said, “I go and watch them on my days off — I’ve had quite a few of them this season — and they can win the lot.

“They’re top of the Premier League, they’re in the Carling Cup final and they’ve got a tough game against Inter Milan in the Champions League next week.

“This is their best squad ever. They had no recognised striker against us and still had fantastic players up there.

“When we saw the team sheet, we thought we might be in with half a chance. But we were beaten by the better team. No complaints.”
